New Series Preview: Lincoln vs. Hamilton

I’m going to start a new series called Lincoln vs. Hamilton where I’ll put a $5 wine (Lincoln) and a $10 wine (Hamilton) of the same type head-to-head in a single-blind tasting.

VS

Now I know that in general there is better wine available at $10 than at $5. There are some seriously good $10 wines. But I’m more interested in the widely-available, supermarket wines. If you’re picking up a bottle o’ red along with your frozen pizza, can you save $5 and get something of similar quality?  We’ll find out.

If I get tired of the Lincoln price range, this series could quickly morph into Hamilton vs. Jackson! In fact, what do you think? Would you be more interested in Lincoln ($5) vs. Hamilton ($10) or Hamilton ($10) vs. Jackson ($20). Leave a comment. Thanks!

  1. Hamilton v. Jackson. Two reasons: Andrew Jackson is my favorite President, and I think you’re more likely to find Hamiltons ($10 wines) that top Jacksons ($20 wines). If you can even track down enough Lincolns to do this several times, they may not often be better than $10 wines.

  2. Personally, I think you’re going to get more mileage out of 10$ vs. 20$. In the Lincoln category, it’s mostly all the same dreck. At least at 10$ you start to get some more interesting stuff. It might be interesting to do Adams + Jefferson (2$ Dollar Bill), and Lincoln vs. Hamilton + Susan B. Anthony + Sacagawea + Eisenhower + Washington (all on 1$ coins). Sort of like those X-Men or Marvel vs. Capcom video games…

  3. Steve & Jeff – My first scouting trip through the supermarket wine section WAS a little scary in the $5 range. Mostly Yellow Tail and other Aussie bottles. (If we had Trader Joe’s here, I’d have more, if not better, options.) Call me a masochist, but I’m still kind of interested in whether (tasting blind) the $5 Little Penguin Shiraz is on par with a $10 Penfolds. I think in the end, I’ll do a mix of both Lincoln vs. Hamilton and Hamilton vs. Jackson. If you come across some good candidate bottles, let me know.

Jeff – I like your idea of the tag-team presidential battle royale, but the blog titles and hashtags would get pretty long. 😉
